Big Dipper

(mouse over to see the outline)

The Big Dipper (is an asterism (not a constellation) of seven stars, with four defining a "bowl" or "body" and three defining a "handle" or "head", that is recognized as a distinct grouping in many cultures. These stars are the brightest of the formal constellation Ursa Major; six of them are second magnitude stars, while only Megrez (δ) is of third magnitude. The North Star (Polaris), the current northern pole star and the tip of the handle of the Little Dipper, can be located by extending an imaginary line from Merak (β) through Dubhe (α). This makes it useful in celestial navigation.

Connecting Dots

During an extended exposure astrophotography shot, two airplanes left trails across the sky.  In this 15 second exposure, each dot along the line are the lights blinking from the aircraft.   In this particular one, I thought the antenna in the foreground would add some interest to the photograph.

This shot was taken on the outskirts of Santa Rosa NM.  We spent a few hours out in the cold trying to get a few good shots.

Mayan Moon

A Waxing Gibbous about 70% visible.

With the Mayan Calendar coming to an end, and people wondering if it marked the end of the world - I am sure those preparing for the zombie apocalypse were disappointed.

Missing Geminid?

Earth has exited the debris stream of rock comet3200 Phaethon, which brings an end to the annual Geminid meteor shower. I spent several hours out under the stars on the peak night - Dec. 14th.  I counted many meteors per hour, many of them bright fireballs.

I had two cameras set up, and took about 150+ photos of the night sky and did not get one meteor photograph!!

This is one of my shots which captured Jupiter (brightest point), Orion, and Taurus constellations, and the Pleiades star cluster.

2X Moon

I am excited about this photo!  I typically attach my camera directly to the telescope for astrophotography (a method called Prime Focus).  Last night I decided to try to attach my Teleconverter  (Canon 2x EF Extender) to the camera an then attach it to the telescope.   What I got was amazing, and a focal length of something like 2000+mm.  This is a stitch of four photos for a combined pixel of 7192 x 6400 (29 inches x 26 inches).  In the coming weeks, I will create a page outlining the equipment and software I use to capture and edit with.
