Yule Tree

The Christmas tree has also been known as the "Yule-tree", especially in discussions of its folkloristic origins.  It is a decorated tree, ideally an evergreen conifer such as pine or fir.  The custom of the tree developed in early modern Germany with predecessors that can be traced to the 16th and possibly the 15th century, in which "devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes."  It acquired popularity beyond Germany during the second half of the 19th century.The tree was traditionally decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts or dates. In the 18th century, it began to be illuminated by candles, which with electrification could also be replaced by Christmas lights.

The Ida Cason Callaway Memorial Chapel at Callaway Gardens in South Georgia.

Callaway Gardens is located in Pine Mountain, Georgia, just outside of Columbus, Georgia. Callaway Gardens was founded in 1952 by Cason J. and Virginia Hand Callaway to promote and protect native azalea species.  Today, Callaway Gardens features a wide variety of recreational attractions including the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, and the John Sibley Horticultural Center.

Neglect of a Relic - A Year of Reflection

A Year of Reflection - Today marks the one year anniversary of HSEPhotography.com! I want to start out by saying this has been a great year.  A lot has happened in only 365 short days.   First I would like to thank everyone that makes this site possible - without that support and encouragement I would not be where I am today. Secondly, just to share some of my stats. I currently have 211 individual post, and over 100+ other photos posted though out the site.  With that, I look forward to another great year of photography!

My Audience is growing world wide.

Missing Geminid?

Earth has exited the debris stream of rock comet3200 Phaethon, which brings an end to the annual Geminid meteor shower. I spent several hours out under the stars on the peak night - Dec. 14th.  I counted many meteors per hour, many of them bright fireballs.  

I had two cameras set up, and took about 150+ photos of the night sky and did not get one meteor photograph!!

This is one of my shots which captured Jupiter (brightest point), Orion, and Taurus constellations, and the Pleiades star cluster.

Depot Cart

A luggage / supply cart from the Fort Payne Rail Depot, in Alabama.
The Depot was constructed in 1891 and pink sandstone was used. The depot was a passenger station for 79 years, but is now a museum for the DeKalb County area.

Smooth As Glass

A sunrise over Lake Acworth from this past week.  The lake was as smooth as glass, without
one ripple on it.  The clouds were hanging low and covered the rising sun giving the lake a reflective sheen without any glare.

Sunrise over Park Marina

An early morning wake up and 30 minute hike to the top of Pine Mountain was in order to capture this morning's sunrise. Pine Mountain is located on the outskirts of  Cartersville, and provides almost a 180 degree view to the south. The buildings in the center of this shot are actually the floating docks of Park Marina on Lake Allatoona.
