Saguaro

Saguaro

The saguaro can grow to be 40 feet high and often exceed an age of 150 years.  They may grow their first side arm any time from 75–100 years of age, but some never grow any arms.

A saguaro is able to absorb and store considerable amounts of rainwater, visibly expanding in the process, while slowly using the stored water as needed. This characteristic enables the saguaro to survive during periods of drought.

Kelso Depot

Kelso Depot

Kelso Depot, established in 1905 and situated in the middle of the Mojave Desert.  It seems like a unusual location, but was crucial in reaching the West Coast.    West of Kelso was a steep grade that trains would need to climb with the assistance of "helper engines".  There was also a natural spring that provided a water source for the steam locomotives.   Kelso Depot was critical in supplying both of those resources.

This section of Highway 86 or the West Tucson - Ajo Highway runs through Tohono O'odham Nation Reservation in Southern Arizona.  This is about a 16 mile stretch of road headed west from Sells Arizona that seemingly takes you to the mountains on the horizon.  It runs West from Tucson, through Why and Ajo, and then turns North to Gila Bend.

Desert View - Watch Tower

Desert View

This structure was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter who is often referred to as the architect of the southwest. She traveled throughout the southwest to find inspiration and authenticity for her buildings. The architecture of the ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau served as her model. This particular tower was patterned after those found at Hovenweep and the Round Tower of Mesa Verde. Ms. Colter indicated that it was not a copy of any that she had seen, but rather modeled from several.

From Desert View, aptly named because of the views to the east of the Painted Desert, you can see the Colorado River make a big bend and continue to the west, the North Rim more than 10 miles away, and a panoramic view of the Canyon.  Just left of the tower on the Horizon is  Navajo Mountain at 90 miles distance,  and  right from center on the horizon are the Vermilion Cliffs at 50 miles.

Panoramic was taken with iPhone X
