Deadman's Bar

Deadmans Bar

In 1886, four men set up camp on a wide gravel bar along the north bank of the Snake River to look for gold. Later, three of the men were found with their bodies half-buried in the Snake.
The three men had been weighted down with stones, but the river’s flow had fallen enough to expose their bodies. When law enforcement officers apprehended the fourth man, he admitted to killing his partners—but insisted that he’d acted in self-defense.  Did he get away with murder—three times over?

The site of the triple murder, now located within Grand Teton National Park, has ever since been known as Deadman’s Bar.

Big Dipper

(mouse over to see the outline)

The Big Dipper (is an asterism (not a constellation) of seven stars, with four defining a "bowl" or "body" and three defining a "handle" or "head", that is recognized as a distinct grouping in many cultures. These stars are the brightest of the formal constellation Ursa Major; six of them are second magnitude stars, while only Megrez (δ) is of third magnitude. The North Star (Polaris), the current northern pole star and the tip of the handle of the Little Dipper, can be located by extending an imaginary line from Merak (β) through Dubhe (α). This makes it useful in celestial navigation.

South Valley Reflection

South Valley Reflection

Several inches of snow fall add to the mystic reflections of red sandstone in South Valley Park.   The park is located west of Ken Caryl, Colorado with over 8 miles of trails.   The area shows evidence of inhabitants occupying the South Valley thousands of years before the Pyramids of Egypt were built, and more recently  provided shelter for early Native Americans.

Trail Less Traveled

The creek that follows the Laurel Fork Trail in Hampton, Tennessee. The uniqueness of the trail is that you hike through about 25 creek crossings with small waterfalls around them. Our hiking boots are still wet!

Doe River Gorge Trestle

In the early 1880s the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (ET&WNC) built a line from Johnson City, TN to Cranberry, NC. The steep, narrow Doe River Gorge was chosen for part of the route, and after heavy blasting through the cliffside and then filling and bridge-building operations, a narrow gauge track opened in 1882, “hugging narrow ledges, squeezing through tight tunnels and crossing the river several times.” The is one of those crossings. the steel of the trestle is still intact, but much of the wood is long gone.
